L’eccezione conferma la regola?
La peggèrrima Darièlla si interroga sull’espressione “l’eccezione che conferma la regola?”. Pure io ho (avuto) qualche problema nel provare a spiegarla, senza venirne a capo.
Giusto ieri, tuttavia, trafficando con il mio L.a.d.r.o. (libro attualmente di riferimento occulto, sembra un acronimo alla topolino che poi tanto occulto non è viso che lo cito abbastanza spesso), ho scovato questa affermazione sulla traduzione inglese dell’espressione che è “the exception proves the rule“.
Most people take this to mean that the exception confirms the rule but they usually cannot explain the logic in this statement. […] The answer is that an earlier meaning of prove was to test (a sense preserved in proving ground) and with that meaning the statement suddenly becomes sensible - the exception tests the rule.
